Since being founded March 17,1995 and Organized November 12,1995, in the back of the Clubhouse @ 2nd & Mifflin. The Second Street Irish Society has evolved from a handful of friends with an idea into a well respected Irish Catholic Charitable Organization.
There are now 100 members who participate in such community activities as food drives, neighborhood clean-ups, coaching youth athletics, blood drives, clothes drives, and patrolling neighborhood streets on Halloween.
Society members help organize and run community fundraisers such as the Two St 5K Run, which benefits neighborhood parishes and youth organizations, The Mary T. Walker Golf Outing, which has raised tens of thousands of dollars for families in need of medical treatment, St. Baldrick Events, which raise money for child cancer research, and our annual scholarships in honor of friends of the society whom have passed; Thomas "Doc" Dougherty, Eric Brinkman, Charles " Buddy" Wray, Father James Farrant, and Katie Kirlin which are awarded annually to 8th graders from Our lady of Mt. Carmel and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parishes, who will be attending Catholic High School.
In March of 2004 the Second Street Irish Society expanded to include the award winning Second Street Irish Society Pipes and Drums who made their debut at the 2005 Philadelphia St. Patrick's Day Parade. This extension of our organization has dedicated a large amount of time and effort to become one of the top and most recognized pipe bands around.
Then in 2006 the Society expanded again. This time geographically though, with the formation of the Anglesea Irish Society headquartered in North Wildwood, NJ. This organization was formed based on the same beliefs as the original Irish Society but for those who are residents of the shore all year long.
Our next progression was into the youth of our neighborhood with the formation of the Second Street Irish Society Stepdancers in 2006. Each year this part of our organization continues to grow and impress with their traditional Irish Stepdancing routine.
As our mission statement reads, we truly do try to enhance the lives of our members, families and friends as we continue to evolve and grow to new heights.
